![]() Friday, October 6, 2006The Danish newspaper wars have been one of the main topics in my European News Media in Transition class. Basically, today an Icelandic investment group will be releasing a brand-new, well-written, free paper into the Danish market, called Nyhedsavisen. Their announcement last summer that they were going to do this made all the traditional Danish papers go nuts and decide to make their own free papers, at great expense, to try and chase the Icelanders out of the market. Many of these free papers were shoddily put together--both because they were rushed to market (in one case, in just a week!) and because they have to avoid competing with their parent subscription-based newspapers they aren't *allowed* be good! Personally, I think it would be hilarious if Nyhedsavisen never actually came out... then all this chaos, hand-wringing, and market posturing would be all for nothing! |
